It was dull, cloudy, and misty in the distance, for the start of our walk today, but not cold. However, we saw plenty of colour in the flowers in some front gardens. And as we walked further into the countryside, the route became so overgrown with brambles, that we had to take a stick to beat a path through!
We went and had a look at some of the sports facilities in our town, which are situated around Shepton Mallet Football Club. As you can see above, there is a skate park (top left), BMX cycling track (top right) and a pistol and rifle shooting range (middle left). It is so important for young people to have these facilities...
As we walked home through Collett Park the sun came out. Jenny and I really endorse the health benefits of walking and so do an initiative in this area called Health Connections Mendip. They have organised a special Health Walk next Friday, starting at the Park Medical Practice at 1pm, and walking around the park. It will be a gentle 20-25 minute walk to encourage adults who would not normally exercise, and anyone is welcome. It is hoped that this will be a catalyst for people to start walking. This group holds other walks in the area, which often ends in a drink and chat at a local cafe - something else which we think is good for you!
Health Connections Mendip was set up in April by GPs in this area, as an innovative way for patients, carers and their families to take control over their health and well being. It also aims to harness volunteers to set up new community support groups and provides loads of services and support - all free. If you want to improve your quality of life this is worth investigating...
